Winter IRB Training - 2010

Winter training has been happening at the Club. Check out these pictures, windy, wet but out there going hard!

Sunset Beach wins Silver Medal at Nationals

Sunsets U21 team of Sam Dwen, Shane Edwards and Mark Edwards won Silver medal at the 2010 New Zealand IRB Surf Lifesaving Championships.

Competing against 37 other teams they went through heats, semi finals and finals to get 2nd place in the Tube Rescue. Click on the photo to enlarge, talk about the proudest team there!

Another fact. Sunset were the only U21 Northern Region team to get a medal at the Championships.

Also competing for Sunset in the team were Nikayla Poole and Sherrie Hobson in the Mass Rescue event. Go Sunset!

2010 Surf Bronze Awards

Congratualations to our new club members who just passed their Surf Bronze Exams this weekend. It's been a tuff road to get there with training weekends, surf swims in stormy seas, rock jumping and dragging the odd rock along the road while on a training run. But it all paid off, so a big WELCOME to our new patrolling members and WELL DONE!!!

Thank you to club instructors Susan and Mark, assisted by Stephen Granshaw and other club members who gave their time to help with trainings.

50 Years Celebrations - Held 4th and 5th December 2009

The Trust Waikato Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service held a successful celebration weekend for 50 years of service to the community on the 4th and 5th December. The celebrations started on the Friday night 4th December at the Surf Club with a casual meet and greet, good food and wine/beer. We had 130 people attend and the highlight of the night were the many photo albums , newspaper clippings and memory swapping with old club mates. The evening finished off with a beer skulling race, old v's new. It was obvious that the old were better a cheating than the new and looked great in their improvised uniform of green rubbish bags.

The Port Waikato School Camp facility had been booked for a formal function on the Saturday night. Many thanks to the Art @ the Port team who did the decorating and thanks to Malcolm for arranging the white lining for inside the facility, marquee for the band and dancing. Everyone looked great decked out in their formal wear. A great night was had with fine food (thanks to FLAX catering), wine and dancing to the Confederates who got together especially for our reunion. Photos were taken of the current committee, decades of club members and everyone as they were greeted at the gate. These photos can be viewed by clicking here>>>. You can order photos up to 6" x 4", 5"x7", 6" x 8" for $5.00 a print (includes postage). Please advise the file name from underneath the photo.

Available to order are T-Shirts, Hooded Sweatshirts, DVD (a record of photos supplied by Club Members) and an excellent book of 'The First 50 Years'. Orders for T-Shirts and Hooded Sweatshirts must be given to Rachel by 22/12/2009. You can download the order form or contact Rachel Johnstone at info@sunsetbeach.co.nz. See below.

90 Mile Beach - IRB Race 5th September 2009

Sunset Beach entered a team in this event. The team was Sam Dwen, Shane Edwards and Mark Edwards. They had a great support crew and travelled north to 90 mile beach to compete in this race. Last year the team gained experience with a 7th place (not bad for first time up), thanks to the parents and support crew. They were keen to get a better placing this year.

The race took nearly 3 hours and they had a time of 2 hours 54 minutes arriving 12 minutes behind the winners. They got 6 place out of 33 other boat crews. Well done, they were the first junior crew with a combined age of 47. Last year they were 20 minutes behind the winners.

New Patroll Members this Year with Bronze Awards

Congratulations to our new bronze members who sat there exams after the end of the season in really cold and rough conditions. They certainly deserve to be patrolling our beach this year.

Fundraiser for IRB Team - Corvette Car Club

The IRB Team recently had a fundraiser day to raise money for their competition expenses this year. They supplied lunch and day of fun for 40 members of the car club. Shane and Sam did a demonstration in huge seas, mangaged to stall the engine and surf the IRB in (just to add to the excitement - no wet suites either... !!) The members had so much fun they want to come back next year. Thanks to all the parent helpers and volunteers. Check out the pictures.

Junior Notices for 2009-2010 season

Hi All

We will be taking the following groups this Sunday 15th November at Sunset Beach . If you and your child has a wetsuit please bring it as the water will be cold.

Remember we need a minimum of one parent for every 5 children in the water and possibly more for group 2 as they are some of the youngest. Please don’t leave it to the same parents every week.

The coach and lifeguard are not included in this ratio. If all the children turn up then at least 3 other adults should be in the water with them.

There could also be more children as I am still waiting for some who have expressed an interest to register. If your child’s name is not on the list it means you have not registered them. Please contact me if you still want them to join the Juniors training or register them at www.lifesaving.org.nz and click on join a club.

I will be giving out t-shirts at the end of each session to the children who have had paid their subs or who pay me on the day. I will not be giving out t-shirts if the subs have not been paid as the club rule this season

is ‘no subs no t-shirt’. I might not have confirmation of any payments from today in time for Sunday so payment on the day is another option if the children want a t-shirt.

THANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID. Payments can also be made by  Direct Credit into Sunset Beach ASB Bank Account - Bank Account:  12-3078-0054360-01  Sunset

Beach Lifeguard Service  Include JUNIOR & your CHILD’S SURNAME and SUBS  Amount:  $10 junior or $40 family or Post a cheque to Raewyn Morgan Made payable to:  Sunset Beach Lifeguard Service  On

the back write JUNIOR your CHILD’S SURNAME AND YOUR SURNAME IF IT IS DIFFERENT and SUBSRIPTION Post to PO BOX 186, Pukekohe 2340.

Groups and times for training.

Rookies at 9:00 – 10:30 at clubhouse. Please bring the uniform from last season if you were given one (even if it doesn’t fit anymore) and fins if you have them. Please remember to name them in some way otherwise they WILL get lost. Don’t go out and buy any until we have discussed which ones are suitable for the surf. Pool fins don’t work in the surf!

Junior Notice - 25th November 2009

Training this weekend will be as follows:

Hamish will be taking his group at 11:00. That group is everyone except the children below. Please remember that all groups require parents in the water.

Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour - Port Waikato 27th and 28th March

Being held Saturday 27th March and Sunday 28th March. This is the last competition on the tour. Sponsored by Hyundai.

Trust Waikato Sunset Beach Lifeguard Tower Demolished

On Friday 14th October the Trust Waikato Sunset Beach Lifeguard Tower was demolished, leveled to the ground and trucked away. Erosion at the beach this summer was so bad due to storms lashing the West Coast that approximately 5 metres of land was taken by the sea leaving the tower tettering on the brink of collapsing into the sea. The council condemmed the tower and confirmed the site of a new tower that will be built in front of the community hall to be ready early in the New Year.
